Well, Happy Belated Monday, oh, it still is Monday here in the Falls.
Our next tour takes us out of the city, into the rural parts of Niagara County. On the ride down to Rubber Duck Landing, take a gander at a few images along the way. Pretty nice gardening in the country, don’t you think? And nice pinto fertilizer too.
Lots of Hosta, Impatiens and Rudbeckia in Western New York.
This house below, has been decorating with rubber ducks in Lockport, NY, for the past four years. The woman has amassed a large number of ducks. She does not even have an accurate count.
When I attend Master Gardener meetings, I am only a short drive down the road. I have driven past this property many times, and each time the ducks have been set up like soldiers, marching their way to the far off lands of Timbuktu.
It was for a promotional photo shoot with the girls and ducks in the photograph, I’m guessing like my drawing here. I guess they could have been Brownies. Not sure how big they were.
When they left, the ducks were not in their usual formation. In fact, they left them all in piles. I was disappointed, but the owner came out and told me I could set up as many as I wanted. Well, I felt a little funny doing this, but I set up the batch below, little blue and pink hats and all. The ducks above were set up already.
But this woman has ducks everywhere and there were four more large piles in the front yard. She told me that there were actually twice as many ducks, but someone came in the middle of the night and stole half of them not long ago. I knew there were many, many more last year. Now the property is fully lighted and has an alarm system to photograph and catch the duck thieves. An expensive remedy to protect the flock.
I asked how the duck collection and display got started, but she told me that this was a secret, and only two people actually know the origin. Not even her children were aware of the story. Must be quite some story.
I asked where the ducks were purchased and she said most of them came as a result of gifts or from Walgreens. The owner was very friendly and a sweet woman. This has to be one of the most unusual display of garden ornament around. But notice….Garden Gnomes. Those guys get around and always have to be included, and on the front steps no less.
Ducks varied in color, size and location. See the teeny ones on the railing in the image above? You may have to click to see the image larger. Ducks are everywhere. This is the way the Girl Scouts left the poor duckies. Just imagine, over three hundred more ducks all lined up from the four piles in the front yard.
This duck display, though rather odd, gets people stopping all the time to take pictures.
I asked the owner about grass mowing. She said that she has a man doing the mowing and when he is done, puts all the ducks back into a design. Not always are the ducks lined up like soldiers, but they are hardly ever in piles either.
