Let’s pretend the day is golden and bright. Hammer away little guy, the feeder is filled for now. But time keeps pecking away… until I leave.
Having made a family last summer, where we started with one, now there are quite a few. Territorial little buggers too. Share the feeders, no way. They chase each other off as soon as they are spotted.

Oddly, they let me in the garden and I get really close. Within inches a few times. I could just snatch one right off the feeder. Of all the birds that visit, they are the most tolerant of my meddling.
Getting them in the garden is easy if you have suet. I have to put suet in the pear tree just so more of them can feed at one time. I showed you how I wedge it in the crotch of the tree and also I will hang it from pine cones.
The only problem with the hanging cones is the squirrels snag them. I hang them on twine and they chew the twine until they fall. I have used wire and they chew that down. Chain would work best, but that is a lot of work. But you have to keep a yard full of woodpeckers fat and happy!

Oh, to answer last post’s question of , “How did I get up in the pear?” Well, from the second floor back porch silly. My tree climbing days are over. Rain, rain, rain this week… but lots of snow on the way, but no worries after I am gone. Also I asked if you knew where we were going? Next post… the answer.

These pictures are so cute! Today I saw a Pileated Woodpecker in my garden! It’s the first time this year that I’ve seen one. He/she was huge!!
Your bird posts are so beautiful and touching. I have a similar spiritual connection to our birds who have seemed to take up residence here. Have you considered compiling your individual blogs into a book! Our small local but hugely successful bookstore, The Bookloft” would surely love to feature it. This a small Berkshire town with a ski area and a Tanglewood draw. Best, Paula
I think it is amazing that they allow you to get so close. Your pictures as usual are stunning. The clarity is out of this world. I have a funny story about woodpeckers. My dad has a cedar house and they come back to the same spot and peck holes. He has tried everything to keep them away but nothing works. So he patches his holes in hopes that they won’t return but they always do! It drives him nuts!

I saw a chickadee at my bird feeder today– the first bird I’ve seen at it since I got it for Christmas. Phil said he saw gold finches over the weekend. Yea!

I love the downy woodpeckers too, and I also find that they will let me get quite close. This has been a good year for woodpeckers – I just saw a northern flicker, which we haven’t had for two or three years, on our silver maple.

I love woodpeckers, for some reason they seem to be a ‘bigger deal’ when sighted. Super photos, love the one where it looks like the bird is looking around the edge of the tree.

I love woodpeckers, and we have lots in PA. I have yet to see the illusive pileated. I seem to appear on the road in Maine just as it has left.
